Devon Wick

Devon Wick is a Los Angeles–based artist whose practice is rooted in personal experience and the emotional shifts that have shaped his life. Working from memory, he translates lived moments into figures, environments, and scenes that carry a distinct emotional weight, using painting as a means to process what is often difficult to articulate in words.

Reflecting on a formative period in MacArthur Park, Wick describes a work as emerging from “a time when I felt stuck and hopeless… trying to find movement in a place that felt like it was standing still.” This sensibility continues to inform his approach, where each painting becomes a reflection on movement, stagnation, and transformation.

His compositions are guided more by feeling than strict realism. Darker tones and heavier brushwork emerge from periods of struggle, while brighter palettes and more open compositions reflect moments of clarity, growth, and hope. Through this balance, Wick explores “the contrast between darker times and the moments of clarity and growth that followed,” emphasizing that both are inseparable parts of the human experience.

Aligned with Neo-Emotionalism, his work centers on emotional honesty and personal narrative. The figures, colors, and gestures within each painting are shaped by intuition, creating spaces where viewers can connect with their own memories and emotional states. Rooted in the landscapes of Los Angeles, his work explores themes of personal memory and transformation, tracing a movement from darkness toward light and redemption.
