Shaylen Nelson is a Los Angeles based multidisciplinary artist working across poetry, performance, painting, and mixed media. His concept-driven practice resists a fixed aesthetic, instead allowing each idea to determine its own form. At the core of Nelson’s work is an ongoing inquiry into the structures that shape meaning, particularly in relation to race, gender, and cultural norms.
Rooted in figuration, Nelson’s work foregrounds vulnerability and emotional transparency. Through intimate portrayals, ranging from self-representation to depictions of interpersonal relationships, his practice revisits shared human experiences, inviting viewers to reflect on memory, identity, and emotional connection. Works such as Unconfined Dimensionality and Save Room draw from deeply personal narratives while resonating with broader collective experiences.
Much of Nelson’s practice centers on the Black experience, explored both individually and collectively. By incorporating Black figures as primary subjects, his work combines cultural richness, historical weight, and contemporary social realities. These elements are often paired with references to music, with titles drawn from songs that deepen the emotional and cultural connection of each piece.
Aligned with the principles of Neo-Emotionalism, Nelson’s work embraces introspection, honesty, and psychological depth. Rather than offering definitive answers, it creates space for dialogue, encouraging viewers to confront their own perceptions and emotional landscapes.
“I feel like my work aligns so well with the key pillars of Neo-Emotionalism. A majority of my work is figurative with transparency and vulnerability at the forefront of what’s being expressed.”
